Fun Ways to Detox!

Detoxing can be something enjoyable we do every day!

And yes, I believe detoxing is as necessary as cleaning your bathroom. Life can get pretty miserable if you don't! But because the liver, the body's detox organ, can be compared to a bathroom - a place for getting cleaned up and for disposing of nasties- I don't recommend waiting for years and then doing it all at once! That will just clog the pipes and bring on a flood of toxins making you sick.

The best way to detox is gently, in the course of everyday life. Consider it just like wiping off the minute grime as it accumulates. One way is to encourage lymph and blood movement, simply because these channels carry nutrients to and wastes away from each cell.

How can you move the blood and lymph?
  • Jump on a trampoline, or even just a mini-rebounder for as few as 5 minutes
  • Alternately apply hot and cold to the skin (hot tub & snow not necessary - just use the shower)
  • Hang upside from the playground equipment, the bed, the couch, or anything else you can support yourself from
  • Get a massage, even an amateur one. Just rubbing your own skin is beneficial. Some people use skin brushes, but you can use your hand and sweep toward your heart
  • Dance, skate, walk, run, swim, or any other active movement you enjoy.
Another way to detox is to open all avenues of elimination: lungs, skin pores, kidneys and bowels.
  • Enjoy a few moments each day of deep breathing
  • Allow yourself the catharsis of sweating - either by exercise or by sauna
  • Find satisfaction in hydrating with an herbal tea such as hibiscus, or a refreshing electrolyte beverage such as coconut water
  •  Eat delicious but naturally bitter foods such as artichoke and arugula to encourage more regular bowel movements
One of the best ways to detox is to de-stress! Some of my most pleasurable daily activities are stress relievers:
  • Humming or singing
  • Expressing love and gratitude
  • Praying or meditating
  • Sleeping
  • Socializing
  • Journalling
  • Laughing
  • Playing, engaging in hobbies
  • Creating
My final recommendation for daily detox is to stimulate the liver itself by consuming
  • "Sulphurous" vegetables (kale,  broccoli, cabbage, turnips, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, etc.)
  • Bulbs from the onion family: garlic, leek, shallot, scallion, onion
  • Lemon or lemon-water
  • anti-oxidant foods high in Vitamin C, such as berries and citrus
  • bitter foods such as chamomile, mint, chicory, radicchio, romaine, endive, dandelion, ginger, turmeric, fennel, and caraway
Don't grit your teeth over it. Consider it a blessing and privilege!
